Have to say that every time we eat at Cool River Cafe, the service is always fantastic and our server Gil treated us like gold, took care of any issues with food without making a big deal, the manager stopped by our table to thank us for coming and the quality of food never leaves us disappointed, I recommend this cafe to anyone wanting great food and friendly service and wish we could eat there more often.

Went here for Valentine's Day and it was an amazing meal. The steak was cooked to perfection and you didn't even need a knife to cut it that's how tender it was. Lobster bisque was delicious and the lobster tail was cooked to perfection as well. The customer service was great I have to say the overall experience was five stars.

Awesome steak! Great service. My birthday was today and felt greatly served. Thanks Richard for the service.

Overall this experience was fantastic! We went for a work lunch so there were a good 12 of us at the table. The entrees were a bit slow coming out, but the service overall was outstanding. I had the ribeye, cooked to a perfect medium rare. The outside was charred and the inside was tender and red. Delicious! I am a little disappointed that there are no side items on any of the entrees. Sometimes you don't want to share a very large portion with your neighbor, you just want a reasonable portion on your plate. With that being said, I got the asparagus on the side and split a tomato mozzarella salad with a coworker. It was indeed plenty of food, I took a to go box. Perhaps the best part though about Cool River is the ambiance. The large glowing orb that lights up the center of the ceiling is pretty neat. There is a sort of otherworldly feeling to it. I would say that this would be the main thing that separates it from other steak houses. I am a big fan of J Alexanders, and for the same price you get a similarly sized steak which tastes the same or a bit better and has sides! So the atmosphere here is truly the only advantage they have. With all of that being said, I would definitely be back. It's a higher end place, so it would be a special occasion kind of deal. But what a great place to take out of town company!

Hosted dinner for 6 on 7/1 - prior reviews are pretty much spot on - a decent place overall but nothing great and you have plenty of options at this price point for steak places around the Greenwood Village area. Very nice inside - clean, open feel and you're not on top of the groups around you. Feels like a Denver based steakhouse should. Our service was fine - saw some other reviews with service issues but all was OK on that end. Ordered a few Ahi Tuna appetizers and the calamari to start. Tuna was good (not great) and the calamari was pretty unremarkable. Had the filet and I do like the fact there are 3 size options as sometimes the petite is not enough but the fell too much. I had the middle option which I believe was 9 oz. Added the wedge salad to start and buffalo chips as my side. Filet was good - cooked a perfect medium and served warm. No complaints for anyone on the food - every one enjoyed seemed to enjoy their meal. I think the Yelp average of 3.5 stars feel right on - not bad at all and I wouldn't avoid it, I just may give another spot a try next time through.

My first time here and I really enjoyed it. Gil was my server and he was amazing! I sat at the bar outside. I ordered a glitter bomb Margarita, which I was disappointed to find out didn't have glitter in it..lol..jk My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because again I'm big on crab cake reviews and the crab cakes here were not good. But that explains why they're $16 where as most places are $30. Also another reason is because that was all I ate so I'll go back, actually eat off the menu instead of just an appetizer and review again.

5 star space, 3 star food & value, and 1 star service = 2. Really great space- Circular dining room rimmed with elevated booths, with a second level- open and airy- very cool architecture here! Food: Simple steaks, seafood, salads, and sandwiches/burgers. For lunch I had the salmon entrée, served with julienned vegetables (meh) and wild rice. It was $18 bucks. Add a hot tea, Lunch was just $25. And it was only OK. Service: SUCKED. The waiter did not care, did not make eye contact, never checked on us, slapped our bill in the table as soon as the meals were brought out (hey, are we at Denny's? No! Because my salmon was $18 bucks!), and we were rushed in our dining experience. hey! We wanted coffee. For $50 for two for lunch, head down the street to Del Friscos. This place is nice looking, but food is meh, and value is lacking. Service, non existent.

For a $28 plate of ribs I expected more. The ribs seemed to have come from an anorexic cow. Hardly any meat on them, not very tender, and no extra wipes for hands so I nicely messed up the white cloth napkins. Scalloped potatoes were delicious. Accidentally got sweet potato fries served too and they were 1/2 raw. Waiter was snooty and inattentive. When my friend asked him as he passed by, could you tell me what comes with the baked potato? He said "whatever you want" and left!! Brought it to her with butter only. She did tell the owner who was very nice and came back and gave her a gift certificate to return which is the proper way to handle the situation. I love the atmosphere here and learned of the gender of my first child at one of their tables so hope they can get their act together and have the service and food match the surroundings once again.

The service is good and the ambiance is nice. The bread and butter are abysmal. The filet is good, however there are some seriously awesome steak places in Denver though. Bottom line, is an ok place, just not outstanding.

I came here for a work lunch a few weeks ago and was fairly pleased. It was a little on the empty side, but it was also the first week after the holidays so maybe people were business lunched-out. The servers were really friendly and prompt. I don't remember what everyone else ordered, but I had the ahi tuna tartare appetizer as my lunch entree and thought it was pretty good. I thought the menu was a little on the pricey side, but hey - wasn't paying so I shouldn't gripe. I'd probably come back here for a post-work HH.

  • Lira N.

Service was great, but food was average. Definitely not worth it the price you pay. For $5 or $10 more for a steak would go to Del Frisco's. This place is overrated.

  • Jeff M.

I am not sure why this place rates at 3.5 stars. It was a solid 4+. The only thing I can think of is, because I went for lunch, I am underappreciating how great the place should be. I see comparisons to Del Friscos, and I would never have thought that. Maybe it's because I do not live here, and I just don't know the restaurant that well. I went to meet a friend for lunch. I had the prime rib sandwich, and he had the mango salad. Both were superb. I cannot tell if the server was trying to be unintrusive because it was lunch, or if she just wasn't very good. Frankly, our drinks were never empty, so I assume she was trying to be the stealthy server. The end felt a little hurried, but it was also 1:30, and the place was emptying out quick, so I suspect she might have been trying to leave for the afternoon. All in all, very good.

  • Correy H.

Great venue! While a bit on the pricey side -- this would make a great date night location. I was impressed with the professionalism of the staff and always keeping my drink full. But the thing I was most impressed with was their selection of side items. I had the pleasuring of dining with a few friends so I got to sample a few items. I recommend the following; mushrooms, wedge salad (w/ vinaigrette) creamed spinach, and asparagus.

The food was divine, and the service was exceptional. The price was exorbitant

  • Jim C.

A bunch of us piano technicians were attending a convention and stumbled upon this place and it was a thoroughly enjoyable time. Our waiter, Rick, was attentive, knew all the menu and wine items really well and had a great sense of humor. I had the scallops. Incredible!

    (5)
  • Joe D.

For the price point it's about a 3, maybe a hair less. The wine list is nothing special and anything that is is so over priced. Anybody that knows me knows that I'm happy to spend money on quality cocktails and wine. It's a little over the top here and not worth it. I've eaten here over the years and have left good reviews. This is a mediocre review. The prime rib ordered medium rare was rare, the wedge salad was fine and service was ok. Just not a memorable meal. I brought a colleague and he thought the same about his pork chop and wine.

  • Robert B.

Excellent service! Server was Gil and he did an amazing job! Chicken salad was fantastic!

    (5)
  • David K.

Food wasn't terrible but wasn't worth the price for sure. I've had better salads from Safeway. Steak wasn't bad also but the service was atrocious. I felt profiled just for wearing sweats and using a groupon. Waiter was rude and very condescending. Let me give you some advice as a former waiter for many years. If someone is paying $40 for a piece of meat you treat that person as if they are wearing a 3 piece suit. Terrible experience!

John at the bar is amazingly friendly and welcoming! Aisland (sp) is so friendly! I love stopping in for a quick bite and a drink; great bar menu! Whether you're staying in DTC on business or live nearby stop in for a nice meal and drink!

This place has changed over the years and changed for the better. Used to have a big nightclub on one side but no more. They now have a very cool bar with garage doors open to the patio and nice gas fire pit and a jazz group on Fridays. I sat at the bar so I could hear the music and have dinner. Started with a ahi tuna app, with a very cool slaw and wasabi cream sauce. For my entrée I ordered a small filet and six cheese potatoes, Cool River version of scalloped potatoes. The steak was perfect and I ate all of the potatoes way to good! I travel to Denver and have not been in a while I would recommend you should come back if you have not visited recently. The Bartender said they have been here for 15 years great place

    (5)
  • Ryan V.

Dinner was good but not out of this world. Decent scotch selection but not very extensive. It was a warm summer night and the bar area was set up to be open air which created a great ambience. Bartender (John?) was friendly and interesting. Waitress in another section had a Taylor Swift look going which was cool. I will likely come back if I am in the area again.

When I first walked in it reminded me of a big city, fine restaurant. Nice layout, cloth napkins, dimly lit, etc. That first impression was immediately dashed when we were seated. The entire seat on my half of the booth was COMPLETELY covered in old bread crumbs. With the hostess standing by and waiting, it took me the better half of a minute to rid my own seat of the remainder of someone else's entree. Once I was no longer sitting in need crumbs, I was handed the menu. While the physical construction of the menu was nice (leather-bound parchment paper), it did leave a lot to be desired. There are few menu options (this is dinner time, mind you. So not the lunch menu) and no drinks are listed. When our waiter came by I asked if they had a list with all of their beverages.....a wine menu and a specialty drinks list we discovered that non alcoholic beverages were nowhere to be found anywhere. Clearly, they aren't trying to corner the family dining market. The bread we got while waiting for our entrees was so stale, it might as well have been a bag of croutons. I had no problem stabbing the oversized steak knife into a small piece of bread and having it have enough rigidity to keep the entire structure upright. I couldn't make this up. The genuinely ridiculous amount of crumbs in our seating area makes sense now. I ordered the 11oz filet mignon. Ive had many steaks and if I have any expertise in dining, it's here. Everything from $20-$300+. The steak was a little undercooked, but that's pretty normal considering the thickness of the filet. It did taste good. Excellently seasoned and overall, well-prepared. The taste of this steak does warrant the price they charge for it. The mushrooms it came with were delicious. You can tell they were cooked in a wine sauce and were extremely well-prepared. The seasoned mashed potatoes were ok. A little on the bland side, but not bad. They're about what you'd expect from an Irish pub. Overall, I think this place is a little overpriced for what they provide. If you want a good steak or seafood, go to Shanahn's down the street. About the same price, much better experience.

Food and service excellent. Chilean sea bass was great. Highly recommend the BBQ bacon shrimp. Steak wraps are very good and the bread pudding is a must desert. The ribs were a little over charred. Good bbq sauce though. Our server Rick did a good job serving.

My visit was on a work related function, so all meals were pre fixe. The food was good, I had a grilled fresh vegetable plate (all items were freshly prepared). On the positive side, the staff truly handled the large group like a table for four (I think there must have been about 30-35 people). The staff knows how to ensure all dishes are served warm and timely. They even remembered I didn't want cheese on my salad (this says a lot when you are feed a herd in suits). The ambiance wasn't the best in the meeting room (cheesy props like giant wine bottles, dusty silk plants and a poor layout for the appetizer and drinks). I have read other comments stating the ambiance was good, so likely the main dining area. I think for a work function where only 3-4 options are made available it is a little unfair to judge. I'd give Cool River Café a second shot with a smaller party size (and me choosing from the full menu).

I was looking for a place in Denver to host a special event for a special lady - with a group of around 40 people. After various discussions, Cool River Cafe came out as the highest recommendation. I started working with their event team in July, and found them to be amazingly helpful, providing a TON of choices in menu/beverage options...ranging from low-end to decadent (I chose the latter, of course). As the event came closer, the event team continued to monitor everything, and as I made (sometimes outlandish) requests, they never batted an eye. End result? An incredible evening in one of their private rooms, with fantastic food, awesome beverages, and beyond believably attentive staff. I gotta give them the biggest thumbs up possible...just a great evening, thanks to Shelby and the event team. Thanks!

This place has gone down hill, we"ve loved it in the past, but this time it was almost empty on a Friday night, mediocre service and food, my daughter asked for a medium steak and was served one that was rare as can be, I think the microwaved it to get it cooked properly, it was returned way to fast to have been regrilled, if you want a good steak dinner I would look elsewhere

I've been here more times than I would like for lunch meetings. Apparently physicians and healthcare executives in the area and south of the area like to have lunch here. It is much better than del friscos which is five minutes away. All the times I have eaten here I can't remember anything I like to eat. It was a nice place for professionals to hang out on a Friday or Saturday night which is why I have them three stars.

  • Cameron F.

The interior looks like a 5 star restaurant, very grand. That's about all it has. The grand interior is then disappoint with a large bar with TVs all over. The food is average and the service is just ok. It's convenient for the DTC but outside of that the price is way to high for what you get. Don't waste your time as there are many other good place in the DTC to go.

Took four co-workers to Cool River for dinner last night. I was excited to try the food because I had heard great things about the restaurant. Though the food was good, it wasn't great. My prime rib was a little chewy (which is very unusual for prime rib). And even though we got to the restaurant early to avoid the crowd, it took the wait staff and kitchen a long time between courses. Perhaps it was just an off night...not sure.

We hosted a family get together on a recent Saturday night and it was superb. The food was wonderful, the drinks were terrific, and the service was perfect. Since it's spring in Denver, snow and traffic made arrivals unpredictable, and some of our 13-person party were up to two hours late. The Cool River staff made it all work smoothly. (They even let us bring in a birthday cake from a local French bakery and served it at the table at the end of the evening. Ask about the cutting fee, of course.) It was surprisingly quiet, too, even though there were people at other tables all around us, which was a welcome change from other venues we'd considered. Reasonable price for the quality of service and cuisine. Highly recommend this as a venue for large parties, especially if restraint is preferred to rowdiness.

I was invited to lunch here a couple of weeks ago and was not super excited after reading the reviews. I think its 3 star average is accurate, as the best part of our meal was the company, followed by the service, then the ambience. The food was unremarkable. I agree with Kelly T., who wrote that it is slightly better than Applebees, but with a superior atmosphere and a larger bill. I ordered the mago chicken salad, which was largely mixed greens, scattered with a few nuts, dried cherries, and chicken. The The pablano-citrus dressing could have saved it, but was on the bland side, which is rare for a vinaigrette. I feel like salads are pretty hard to screw up. Maybe the entrees are more interesting, but I doubt I'll head back to find out.

Bacon wrapped scallops.....home run, appetizers: BBQ prawns home run, dry but good flavor. 17.00 for a Paso Robles Red Blend. Least expensive glass of wine. Great service though. Great ambience. Artichoke hearts appetizer was good with the sauces. Quartered and roasted so a bit dry but good.

I was very impressed with the changes made in that Cool River is no longer the over 40 hipster hangout it once was and is now a more classy/modern restaurant. Took advantage of the Restaurant Week offer and Cool River did not disappoint. The serving size of the filet was perfect and perfectly cooked. Service was wonderful and the jazz music much more pleasing than loud dance/techno. Great for date night or group get togethers.

A vendor for my company hosted a luncheon for about 20 people this week. Understandably, we didn't have full reign of the menu and were able to select from a hamburger, grilled chicken sandwich, turkey salad or a portabella mushroom sandwich. I ordered the portabella without cheese. It looked good when they put it in front of me - there were mixed greens and it was on a whole wheat bun. However, when I took my first bite, that was when I realized that literally what I saw was what I got. There had been no additional seasonings (not even salt and pepper) on any of it. I do love the natural flavors of food but even hard core purists can appreciate some salt. It heightens the whole experience. Being really hungry, I ate it all and figured that I was eating a really low fat meal so that's good I suppose. My advice; if you offer a very limited menu make sure that the items you offer have been done well. Oh, and if a waiter had come back to check on everyone that would have been lovely too.

Visited Cool River Cafe at my boyfriend's suggestion for the first time last night and am disappointed to see a three star rating on Yelp. My experience was perfect and deserving of all five stars I'm awarding. We were able to walk in at 6:30p on a Thurs night without a wait, although they did ask whether we had a reservation. The hostesses complimented me on my dress and took my coat and boyfriend's scarf to check. The receipt was brought to our table. They sat us front and center by the fireplace, which was unexpected and absolutely perfect after coming in from the arctic chill. Our server Anakin (hopefully related to the Skywalker family) was prompt and courteous. Service was excellent throughout the night. The food? Some of the best bread I've ever had at a restaurant. My tomato and moz salad was more than generous in potion and delicious. I finished the entire thing. The venison was fabulous; the sauce in the dish kept me going back for more although I was full. Compared to other fine dining in the area, the portions more than made up for the price (although I don't think the prices were outrageous for the quality of the experience.) We will definitely be back!

We had a gift card here from our Apartment management company. When we walked in the hostesses were very friendly and asked if we wanted to be seated inside or outside, we chose inside because we had both forgot our sunglasses. When we sat down, Casey, our server was prompt about greeting us. We needed a few more minutes to decide what we wanted and she was patient, attentive but not hovering. We ordered a caprise and Forks salad to begin with. Both EXCELLENT choices and the bread that they brought with it was warm and wonderful. Our entrees came out in perfect timing- I had the pork chop with the pear glaze sauce and the beau had a Cowboy ribeye (he said it was good, he ate it all before I could even ask for a bite!). I also had a Cab Franc that was wonderful! Overall our first experience was incredible and we will be back because of the great service and the impeccable food!

A fine choice if you don't care for portion size, taste and you have money to throw away. Our fault for not asking the price of the "special". 2 eight oz steaks ( overly peppered) two sides, two ice teas equal $115. Oh yeah, another $25 for the drive through we went to afterwards. I love steak and am wiling to pay for quality but I just don't understand how these people think they are getting away with this. Probably a good place for the pretentious but a very poor choice for anyone who wants a meal.

I've been to Cool River several times and was generally unimpressed, but I am going to give them 4 stars specifically for my last excursion. We came here for a work dinner/presentation, so that might have assisted the extra step in the game, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve credit for it. We were in a very small private room, we had one server who greeted us and got us drinks immediately upon our respective arrivals. He stood aside and never interrupted or bothered us, but never left us wanting. He got our orders quickly, brought the food out quickly, and we barely noticed his presence. The meal was great, the prime rib was perfect and very tasty asparagus and mashed potatoes to accompany it. Cheesecake for dessert topped it off nicely. As far as critiques, we were in a pretty small room, and they refused to allow us to use the video screen for the presentation, so the addition of the projector screen made for a slightly more cramped feel. All in all we were very happy with this evening.

Food is pretty decent, but the price just isn't worth it. I wish I could go into more detail, but that first sentence describes the whole shebang. Everything from atmosphere, service, and food is good (Not amazing) but the bill beats you up in the parking lot after vandalizing your car. If money isn't a issue, why not go top dollar and hit Shan's or another ritz? If you are a poor slob like me, I promise your night will end better at a Old C's or the like due to looking at your bank account later and not having a stroke. In short, too expensive but not enough quality.

I was here for work this past week and I went back 2X it was good to me or it could be the limited choices we had in the immediate area. Both times I went it was for dinner-The first time I went with 1 other person and the next I went with 7. We walked in on the first occasion with no reservation and on the second we made reservations because we had a bigger party. The food that everyone had was well cooked and tasty-though nothing extremely exciting that you wouldn't find at any other good steakhouse...the average price of the meal per person with wine was about $65.00 which I thought was fair based on the quality of the food. The atmosphere is rustic and I guess what people would call cozy. The waitstaff I preferred the waitress I had the first time rather then the waiter we had on my second visit-he just seemed weird. The only issue I had on both occasions no one was at the host stand and we stood there waiting for several minutes-so long as a matter of fact that we went looking for someone to seat us both times...a little annoying

Eating here was a bit of a bummer. The place is gorgeous inside, very upscale. Service was great, with a very attentive server. She was very patient with us as we were a bit scattered, all of us arriving over the course of an hour (5 in the party). I was the last one. She quickly got drink orders in and followed up with food orders. Service was a 5 out of 5. Food was the disappointment. Got the filet special with bacon wrapped scallops and scalloped potatoes. Steak was kind of off flavored (not as in spoiled) but just in the way it was cooked. Scallops were tasty, but on the lukewarm side. I have a bit of an issue with scallops in general (texture) but I can't complain on the order as my buddy ordered for me. He loved his BTW. The rest of the folks were happy with theirs. Beer selection is decent, but no draft. Not sure what is up with that? Can someone explain why restaurants don't do kegs? Overall, I am going to give this a 3 out of 5. Only the service saved it from a 2.

  • Naomi B.

I only had a salad here but it was fresh and tasty. My only suggestion would be for the restaurant to offer more "lunch options" of full meals but small plates. I don't want a $20 lunch but I settled on the salad due to the limited lunch options. This place might be better for dinner.

FYI: This is a review for a private happy hour. We came here for a business happy hour and the first thing I noticed was the enormously high ceiling when you walk in. The name lends itself to something more informal, so I was pleasantly surprised by the higher end decor. The few staff members I interacted with were friendly and helpful. The food we were served was appetizers on passed trays, and I didn't try any so I'm of no help there. I really wasn't overwhelmed or underwhelmed. Can you just be "whelmed?"

Restaurant #5 of 2012's 5280. My last Cool River experience was in the late 90s in Dallas TX where I loved the place. I went here thinking I'd get near to the same quality that I've gotten at Brook's Steak House or at Del Frisco. I was sadly mistaken. The good: 1. The wait staff. 2. The bread was very light and flavorful. The bad: 1. Sitting in the dining room, I could smell smoke coming from somewhere. 2. The salad was boring. The ugly: 1. I ordered the 5oz filet (even Del Frisco's filet was 8oz) with a bit of crab meat on top, it was an inferior grade of meat to the other two places mentioned here. 2. The devils advocate shrimp dish was good enough other than the shrimp were covered in a sauce with the tails left on so you had to get your hands dirty or waste a bunch of the shrimp just cutting off the tail. 3. The cheesecake was downright nasty. Prices are way too high for the overall quality of the food. Thank you very much but, I'll spend my hard earned cash elsewhere.

Came here for a business lunch and learn event. It was a set menu but the appetizers and the entree were pretty nice from what I recall. Its well set up for business lunches / dinner and a pretty good venue to kick back and do some hardcore schmoozing :-)

A friend of mine recommended this restaurant based on his experience a few years ago. We had a business dinner in Dec 2013. Not impressed. Calamari was very rubbery. Entree not good. The beef taco appetizer was not bad but a bit too fatty.

Long time patron, and last night again another wonderful time before the symphony performance I went to. Sean is a waiter there and sure makes the experience enjoyable. Dont forget to order the Devil's Shrimp. The place used to be so big but now with the new bar area its very comfortable. Need to remember to head there during the summer to enjoy the outdoor sitting area

Went here last night for Restaurant week. I have to say the value was good for 52.80, but I would have been very disappointed if I had paid full price which would probably be at least double 52.80. The bread, salad, filet and mashed potatoes were pretty good, I'd rate those a 4/5. The asparagus was OK and the dessert was actually disappointing. The cheese cake crust was very overpowering and that's really the only taste it had. Dessert gets a 2/5. I would come back for restaurant week again, but I would never come here at full price. The scotch list was missing many things and the prices were very expensive. They wanted $15 for a plain Macallan 12.

The upstairs booths are the worst place to sit. Went here ~15 years ago when they first opened and we were seated upstairs. The air conditioning was so cold and when we asked to have it turned down, we were told they couldn't touch the thermostat because it was inconveniently located in one of the occupied booths. Last night we went for Valentine's Day and we were escorted upstairs and immediately noticed a strong, cold breeze on us. We asked if this could be adjusted and were told they can't even turn it off now. The blowers are directed straight at the booths and it was very uncomfortable. We did get moved to a less breezy table but noticed every new couple who were seated at some of the booths immediately began looking around at where the breeze was coming from. It amazes me that a restaurant is aware of a climate issue and doesn't spend the money to fix a problem. The food was mediocre for the price. The server was the best part. He was friendly and pleasant. If you go, request a table downstairs unless you have hot flashes and want to be blasted by cold air your entire meal.

Came here recently for a business lunch and the servers were excellent. They could see we were discussing important things and didn't intrude on us to take our orders or give us the specials until we opened the menus (about 15 minutes after we sat down). The food came out quickly. I had a buffalo steak salad fajita thing that was completely ginormous. I wouldn't really call it a salad, or a fajita, but it was still yummy. I ate maybe half of it and still felt like I'd barely touched it. Prices weren't that cheap (approx $13 for a burger, $18 for my salad fajita thingy), but you don't come here because you expect the food to be cheap.

Valentines dinner. Yikes! Special menu and special pricing. In another words, stick it in where it hurts. Our dinner was so so. wait service was so so. overall, nothing to write home about. Where else can you get dinner reservation week before the Valentines? Considering it was Valentines and considering jacked up price, there overall performance was A-OK. Nothing special. I just dont welcome restaurants charging high prices for mediocre food and mediocre performances. I rather spend $ at Elways or Capitol Grill next time.

We eat here quite often, in Texas and Colorado, because it is one of my son's favorite places. The food quality is not as good as it was a few years back, and the prices are high for the lower quality, but the service is always top notch. We had an early dinner here tonight, and the filet was delicious, juicy, slightly under-cooked (as usual), and the mushrooms were tasty. We started off with bread, and the caprise and Forks salads. Yummy way to start the meal, and my favorite part of the dinner. If you want great service, come here. Know in advance, the food is a little pricey for what you get, but we come here for making memories (and my husband and I do not like to try new eateries, since we like knowing what to expect as far as quality, service, and price).

I have been here several times over many, many years. Each time I go, I do really enjoy myself here. The food here is fresh and I can tell they use high quality ingredients. Every meal I have had here has been good. More recently I went there with my Sister-in-Law (one of my brother's wife from Pittsburgh) and had their crab cakes (appetizer) and wedge salad. Both were very good. She had their tacos (and she gave me one and that too was yummy). The ambiance was very calming while we were able to have more of a private conversation at one of their booths. Other times i have been included happy hour (had a great time), and also for one of my friend's wedding reception (fabulous food and set-up). So if you are in the DTC area and looking for somewhere nice to go, I would definitely recommend here. Check it out! (Oh, and 4 instead of 5 since it doesn't quite make it on my all-time favorites places)

First of all I'll start out by saying for years now I've always envisioned Cool River as being a bar, a bar with hungry Cougars hitting on young men. Which isn't really Cool Rivers fault that for some reason they were the butt of the joke on a coworker. What I didn't expect was a super fancy steak restaurant with super good food. Prices were a bit high, but the steak slides off the bone, and the sides were huge. And everything was so fancy....and the wait staff was super friendly and pretty promote. I guess all these years of thinking sketch bar with Cougars was all ripped out from under me and that disappointed me a bit, basically I've been telling my coworker that he eats at high quality steak houses often. Burn on me...burn on me.

Went for lunch for the first time here with my coworker. I had the featured stuffed jumbo shrimp with bison rib tips. It was delicious. The atmosphere and service were also very good. I'd like to go back for a dinner service with my girlfriend.

In few words: Embarrassing, inedible, over-priced. In more words: I took friends here for lunch yesterday and I was down right appalled. Literally the only good thing I can say about our experience was the valet was fast and friendly. --The service was average and the waiter actually advised us against ordering a few things on the menu I asked about (with no suggestions on what TO order). --It took 5 minutes to get a wine list to us. --The food took 45 minutes to arrive and they were maybe 60% full when we were there. --We ordered different 4 things on the menu and all 4 were barely edible. --We ordered 2 appetizers, 1 salad, 1 entree and 1 glass of wine and the bill was $100. One of these was a $13 artichoke (seriously???). I have eaten better in a fast food restaurant recently. I was totally embarrassed about having my friends drive down to meet me. We were rushed and left unsatisfied to say the least. Extremely awkward. I spoke to the manager about the experience, and he offered to refund my money and send me a card to come back another time. I hope to never step foot in there again. It was horrendous.

Not sure why this place gets a bad rap for some. We came here for a birthday dinner with my kids on a visit to town. We were on the early side, but they treated us very nicely (not typically a place where kids frequent). Steak and apps were delicious. Service was prompt and attentive. And the decor was really nice. A bit huge cathedral ceiling. Tip: There was a great room for parties or business meals. Looked really cozy. Would definitely give it a try.

Very rich food, but the real stand-out here is the service. Cool River Cafe has clearly invested the time and the expense to train their service staff to operate at a five star level. What you need to know: This is a good business lunch/dinner option with superior service. Worth a visit. Still looking for that signature dish that sets this place apart from other high-end eateries.

I love this place. Every time I go. Consistency people - IT MATTERS! I had a great lunch date here, and the food was terrific as usual. I had the peppered Tenderloin salad and it was fantastico! It was huge - I had to bring half home (which I generally don't do, especially with salads), but I couldn't wait to get it home and attack it later after I had time to work out and nap. The service is always outstanding. The staff is top O the line. It's definitely a little pricey, so save it for a special occasion or when your parents are in town ;) But, well worth the ambiance, the food, the service, and everything else that you can find at Cool River.

Definitely caters to business travelers or at least that is what it appeared to be and I was also in town on business. A fair number of the guys were in suits but I felt comfortable walking in jeans (as did my co-worker) so you could really go either way. We were able to get a table for two even though the place was busy on a Tuesday night. Food was good...I ordered the tomato salad and mussels. The tomato salad was great and the mussels were decent but the broth was a bit on the salty side (having chorizo in it obviously didn't help the salt factor). The mussels were definitely large enough to be my entree. Wines by the glass were uninteresting. My co-worker seemed pleased with the salad and sandwich he ordered (although he did seem surprised over the price of the salads, guess he doesn't eat out a ton because it's not like he's from BFE). It is located in a strip-mall but it seems like most things in the area are. It was a quick walk from our hotel.

Stopped by for a late lunch. Met by very friendly greeter and seated promptly. Has the Peppersteak salad and the grilled chicken sandwich. Very nice salad and the peppersteak was tender and juicy and complimented the salad well. Grilled chicken was done nicely and very tasty. Nice upscale atmosphere. Will return someday and try the dinner menu.

I went in here meaning to not think it was awesome....I really did. I mean, I can't help but pass judgment on the Coug River (a friend came up with that, not me)....for one, the general co-worker consensus is that it's awesome. Red flag #1. Red flag #2: it's a chain. Red flag #3: it's outlandishly expensive. So my expectations weren't high when I went for a work-related dinner (all paid for, fortunately). I've been here twice before, once for dinner a few years ago and the second time at lunch recently. The bar service was not awesome and my mojito was not awesome either. Usually they're too sweet, but in this case it was too limey and seemed to be lacking soda water and booze. Our server in the dining room, however, was FANTASTIC. Probably one of the best I've seen. She was incredibly knowledgable about their construction going on (they moved the bar) and the extensive wine list as well as the menu. As she went around the table asking everyone what they'd like for dinner, she'd confirm with them what rare, medium-rare, etc was to Cool River and (once served) had everyone cut into their steaks to make sure they were the cooked correctly. I dove into the salmon entree - blindly as it's simply listed as "salmon" on the menu. She mentioned it came with vegetables and rice to which I responded "that's great!" but I was really thinking was "oh shoot, I bet they're lame." My whole entree was actually really tasty and HUGE. The cut of salmon had to be at least 8 or 10 ounces, perfectly grilled and topped with peppercorns and a pool of the tastiest mustard sauce ever on the side. Rather than lame vegetables, it sat atop a bed of julienned vegetables (carrots and squash) and a side of chewy wild rice. It was important to go slow on the mustard sauce so every bite had some love slathered on it (and it was also pretty salty if you took a big bite). You can add a salad to your entree (salmon is $26, and steak and sea bass are more in the $30-35 range) for the low price of $7 or $8 depending on what you get. I went for tomato mozzarella. Not a great representation of what it could be, but again, very large and topped with a ton of fresh basil. What really impressed me was how three servers would bring the food out so that everyone was served at precisely the same time. Literally, they descend from above and all in the span of two seconds, everyone has an entree in front of them. We also got an appetizer platter as determined by the server and three desserts (bread pudding, creme brulee, and pumpkin cheesecake). Appetizer platter featured the usual suspects: calamari, quesadillas, and shrimp wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cheese or something absurd like that. As with most higher end DTC restaurants, I probably wouldn't go here on my own....but then, this place could be affordable if the huge entree was shared and I'd go home just as full and happy.

We went for our anniversary last night... The bartender seemed like a guy from a cartoon... deep voice and at one point he actually said "hey baby, what's shakin'?" RIDICULOUS. Service was poor and slow The only reason I am giving them two stars is because the food was ok... overpriced but ok. Will not be back

Visited yesterday with 2 colleagues. I ordered the chicken pannini sandwich. It was okay but nothing special. The sandwich was a bit dry although the spinach on top was fresh. It was $12. Had it been $6 I would have given it 4 stars but the price and the lack of "oomph" makes it a 3-star. The tea was okay but not delicious. The service was good. The total for food and tip for 3 people was $70.

I went for lunch with a friend. The ambiance was great, very posh. The staff was friendly and professional, if not distant. The food was, well, it tasted like chain food and considering the price they were asking, I was shocked at what a pour quality meal I had. The two salads they offered for roughly $13.50 had ice berg lettuce! (Who uses ice berg anymore? McDonald's, yes, but not a restaurant within this price point.) We asked them to substitute mixed greens and spinach. I got the almond crushed chicken. There wasn't much in the way of greens in the salad and it was so doused in dressing it was almost inedible. While the chicken was okay, that was the majority of the dish. The tomatoes were tasteless, although the avocados were good. I doubt any of it was organic or free range. I would avoid this place, but I'm not certain if there are any decent restaurants nearby.

This is the classy atmosphere with great service you've been looking for... AND it's not shoulder to shoulder packed. The space reflects a modern decor and nice drinks, for a great price! Had a great dinner salad when I was there with my cocktails. The jazz band was playing there, and this was an added live music aspect to our classy night out:) Not sure what this place was before... but I had a great time as did everyone with us.... Oh and they have a huge back room that connects to the entire place... great for birthdays, events or meetings:)

I had dinner at the Cool River Café with several other colleagues for business. We started with the "Absolut Peppar Shrimp" cocktail, Ahi Tuna and the Asada Tacos appetizers. The Absolut Pepper Shrimp was tasty; I probably would never have put barbeque sauce on shrimp, but somehow the combination worked. All the appetizers were very good and I enjoyed them quite a bit. For the main coarse I had the III Fork Salad the Jim Beam® Rib Eye. For sides we had the White cheddar & Chive Cream Corn, Mac & Cheese, Sautéed Mushrooms, Buffalo Potatoes and Asparagus'. The service was excellent and the appetizers were excellent. The III Fork salad was delicious and I wished I had more. The Jim Beam Rib Eye, however, was poorly prepared, it was served rare as requested, but it was cold throughout and lacked any distinctive grill carmelization; it looked like a piece of meat that came of a hot table at a cafeteria rather than food served at a popular steak house. One of the other diners at our table had ordered the very same steak; it had a nice char on the outside. I sent the my steak back hoping for some improvement, they did not give me a new one they microwaved it and returned to to me medium-rare to medium with no char improvement. All the side dishes were served hot; none were terribly noteworthy except for the sautéed mushrooms, which were by far my favorite side dish followed by the white cheddar & chive cream corn. It's all about the beef, Cool River Café is supposed to have the steak mojo down to a science and unfortunately they did not. I was truly disappointed, however, I enjoyed the evening and thought the ambience and service were very good so I might eat at Cool River Café again to see if the steak preparation failure was an aberration.

Great place, food , and service. I originally wanted to try the famous SHANAHAN'S STEAKHOUSE but was told it was fully booked. Our hotel concierge told us that there's a local Steakhouse that's better (iho) and cheaper and that was the Cool River Cafe. She called and managed to get us a reservation (Sat). The place is very nice kindof reminds me of a ski resort with bricks, high ceilings and fireplaces inside. We sat down and our waiter came promptly to order drinks. He told us the specials fo the day and was very nice. We got some nice warm bread and enjoyed the fireplace close by. I ordered the 20 oz bone-in cowboy ribeye and it was cooked perfectly (med-rare) and included a side. Very tasty. My business partner ordered the bacon wrapped scallops and there was about 6 large scallops and also cooked perfectly. The service was very good and our waiter was nice enough to split the dishes into two ahead of time so we can share it. Paired that with a nice bottle of wine and we're set. Didn't have a chance for dessert as we were quite full but we ordered one of their famous chocolate cake to go for our hotel concierge for recommending a great restaurant. Will definitely be back next time in Denver!

For years, we lived near DTC and I would drive past this place wondering about it. And for years, I avoided it like the plague. I have no idea why, I just did. I met someone for lunch the other day, told them to choose the place, and they chose Cool River. It was... fine. Not terrible, not great, just fine. In every way. Definitely a business-lunch type of spot. As in, my jeans and black turtleneck were glared at by a few patrons (Listen banker dudes, don't be mad that you have to wear a suit for work and I don't. And really, that was dressed up for me, so be glad I wasn't in my fleece onesie.) Service was... fine. You know, nervous kid who is trying to follow the script from his training manual and is kind of terrified to laugh or smile? Picture the guy selling magazines from Office Space, but as a waiter. That. Anyway, I digress. I had the chicken panini, other two people at our table had the Buffalo Burger and some salad. Everyone deemed their meals... fine. My chicken was overcooked, but sandwiched with bacon and cheese, it did okay. Prices - business lunch pricing - high for the mediocre nature of the food. In conclusion - it's not a terrible option if you need to take someone somewhere "nicer", but don't expect to be blown away by, well, anything. OH, side note, I did see a sign in the restroom advertising a happy hour special that involves single malt scotches and percentages off based on the year of the scotch....

I came to Cool River Cafe to hear a business presentation, and so my lunch, and my family's lunch, were paid by the company. Normally that would probably make me give four stars, but I tried to pretend like I was paying for the meal. We were given a choice of entree- grilled salmon, the Devil's Creek shrimp, an 8 oz. prime rib, or the peach grilled chicken. We also received bread, asparagus and mashed potatoes, as well as a choice of cheesecake or chocolate mousse cake. The bread was actually the best part of this meal- hot, freshly made and flaky. The salmon, which all three in my party got, received some very mixed reviews. Mine and my mothers had great char, and those areas tasted great, but the inside of the fish was slimy and one of the fishiest things I have ever eaten. My father's, however, was apparently great as he said it was extremely mild. We enjoyed our asparagus, which was just simply grilled, but the mashed potatoes were inconsistent for me. Every other bite tasted like boxed potato flakes, which isn't possible because these were chunky and had skins on, so how they managed to make real red potatoes taste like flakes is a mystery to me. I had the chocolate mousse cake for dessert, and my dad had the cheesecake. He loved both desserts, and I thought his cheesecake was pretty tasty. The strawberry sauce, though, was very sweet and syrupy. My cake, however, to me was one of the least appetizing things I have ever eaten, even moreso than the salmon. It tasted like a very cheap boxed cake mix, sandwiched with overly sweet, fake tasting mousse, and iced over with overpoweringly sweet chocolate frosting. To me it tasted and felt like they took jarred frosting and kept it in the refrigerator for a while. I thought the service was pretty good- there was only one waitress for our party of twenty people, and she was very good at not being obtrusive, but keeping up with everyone's drinks. Although the experience was fine, I checked prices on the website- my salmon would have been $20, the other entrees offered would have been between $25-$30. I saw the other entrees- The shrimp looked OK but there were only four of them for an order that normally costs $27. The chicken, which I think is in the $20 range, was a very small butterflied breast, covered in a horrifyingly orange sauce. This of course, does not include side items, which would have cost $7-$10 extra. I would of course return if someone else were paying, but I'd much rather go somewhere else for fresher food.

I was invited for dinner to this place. The ambiance is quite nice, and based on the expensive menu it presents as a "high end restaurant," but I was surprised they have booths, really? I was under the impression that booths were used in diners. That alone gave me the impression that this was a chain restaurant. I order the steak oscar, what a mistake! The crab overwhelmed the taste of the meat I couldn't even taste the steak, and the steak was a bit tough. For dessert I had the cheesecake, it was way too sweet, drenched in caramel sauce. I felt like I was eating sugar right out of the container. I couldn't really taste the cheesecake. I didn't finish my meal, and most importantly I will not return to this restaurant and pay overpriced for a poorly made dish.

Classy ambience, great wine selection, good food, efficient friendly service... essentially everything you'd expect from an upscale eatery. After finding my vegetarian options limited to the salad section, I asked the server about any alternatives, I was delighted to be brought an entire vegetarian menu... bonus points for Cool River!

We went for RW 2013. The food was good. Had the salmon which came with asparagus and garlic potatoes. The specials also come with salad and bread which was warm and soft. The you get your choice of two deserts. We had the chocolate cake which was really good. I was able to take half of mine home. My mother had the petite filet , she said it was good , but it was very small. She had nothing to take home. The biggest problem is they turn down the lights making it so dark we can barely see our food . We had to take off the lampshade on the little lamp on our table to see. I'm all for ambience but this was just way too dark.

I just started workin in the DTC, and my new managers took me out to lunch here the other day. I really enjoyed it. The food was good, the atmosphere was good, and the service was excellent. I got their version of a BLT and it was huge and delicious. I had to save half for later. They have a selection of sides to choose from, and the rice I got was absolutely delicious. The server was very attentive, and our food arrived quickly after ordering. Great for business lunches. The hostess gave one of my companions a blue napkin so that he wouldn't get white flecks on his dark slacks. I just loved that. There's also a cigar bar there as well that looked very nice. Expensive, but I think worth it. I plan to go back and try dinner soon.

We went with two other couples for 5280 week. Got there a little early and went in the bar and received prompt service for a pre dinner drink. Very friendly staff. We were than seated at our table upstairs. Perfect spot. All six of us enjoyed the salads. Two got steaks, three got salmon, and the last person ordered shrimp off the menu. Every dish was prepared to perfection. Our desserts were enjoyed and all of was were very happy with choosing the Cool River Cafe for dinner. Afterwards went back to bar for a drink. Was a great evening. We are all looking forward to going back.

To start, this place has the stupidest name for a restaurant ever. It sounds like the name of an apartment complex that is being built on the Aurora/Denver border and advertises its apartments as "unique flats." I've been here twice (on someone else's tab) and I have felt like an utter douchenozzle each time I've gone. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly and they are the reason I enjoyed my visits there. The food is, well, better than Applebees, but for the amount they charge, I should be having a mouthgasm with every bite. And sadly, I don't. Something about the atmosphere in this place screams "trying too hard."

A fine non-dining experience. Based on past Yelp reviews, my experience is probably an anomaly, but nevertheless it is my experience there this evening. I decided I would give it a try as I was staying nearby. Upon arrival, I was shown to my linen-clothed table by the maitre d'hotel in his grey suit and lavender tie, and no sooner was I in my seat than the Perky Waitperson showed up with my menu. After a few moments studying the menu, the Perky Waitperson showed up again and I ordered the Caesar Caliente salad and the Crabcake appetizer. "No Problem!" she perked. I am given to understand that this is the modern equivalent of "Thank you" but I am not sure. It may be that they have had problems with the Caesar and Crabcakes in the past, but this time she was sure it would be "No Problem!". Or perhaps she has had trouble in the past remembering orders, but this time it would be "No Problem!". Alas, I will never know. About 10 minutes after placing my order with the Perky Waitperson, a Junior Assistant Waitperson, 2nd Class, Non-Perky, arrived with a glass of iced water. The iced water was served in a stylish, stout, faceted clear glass tumbler. The water was clear and cold. The ice cubes were nicely formed, although a few of them were cloudy and had cracks in them. The water tasted crisp and cool, clean and refeshing to the palate with a nice finish and no aftertaste. I savored this excellent glass of iced water for another 10 minutes. After waiting over 20 minutes for some form of food to arrive at my table, I realized that the Perky Waitperson's "No Problem" was either an exclamation of a vain hope, or perhaps, the harbinger of a cruel hoax perpetrated on a hungry man. In either event, I was growing ever more hungry, and with no prospect of food in my immediate future at this establishment, I rose and headed for the door. On my way out, I suggested to the manager that actually serving the food that their customers ordered might be a good way going forward for them. I walked across the parking lot to Il Fornaio where I was quickly served a delicious glass of Chianti Classico and a Pizza Fradiavola.

Why pay such high prices for a average restaurant experience? $39 for a tiny steak, could not have been more than 3 oz, also a very small portion of crab legs with a side? The atmosphere is worn and service fluctuates. I want to have fun when I go out. Exciting or at least interesting atmosphere required when it's $50+ per person. I'm sure some people swear by this place, but I just don't get it. You could fall asleep waiting for drinks it so mundane. It's very 2007 and passe. Trying to think of something nice to say and best I can do it mention the acoustics are good.

Went here for my nephew's rehearsal dinner which was held in a small banquet room in the back of the bar. Very nice and intimate. The service was very attentive and excellent, particularly Steve who made sure wine glasses were refilled and kept the beer flowing. Dinner was delicious-had the choice of 2 salads, 3 entrees, and 2 desserts. I had a wonderful salad with cranberries and walnuts, salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus served by waiters-nice service. The chocolate mousse cake was good, but very rich-I could only eat half of it. I would love to come here again and try their regular menu.

I'm a big fan of cool river cafe. They have prime cut steaks and great sides and salads. The service is top notch and they also have a cool cigar bar where you can sit back watch the game, smoke a stogie while enjoying your steak. Class class class. I've had all the steaks on the menu as well as the burgers and lobster tails. Everything was good, I was never disappointed with anything. Cool atmosphere and good wine list as well. Great for a date or a business lunch.

Great for special events! Garlicky Ranch dressing and calamari is amazing! It is not cheap! We first found this fabulous little gem to celebrate our 1 year anniversary and the decision to buy our first colorado home! The food - oh my gawd the food! We always start with calamari and this version is great! There are peporchinies thrown in for extra flavor. Skip the marina sauce - just squeeze some lemon and eat! The wedge salad with the garlicy ranch dressing. Mmm! Ask for the dressing on the side and dip the bread in it! Ooooh! I usually go for the petit filet! Sometimes the have a special with portabello mushroom and blue cheese - wow - amazing! Hubby always gets the diablo shrimp! He loves it! Seriosuly bacon wrapped shrimp? The service is always amazing! When you get steaks they bring you the meat and a little flash light so you can confirm the doneness of your meal! The wine list is great! We try and get a local bottles of wine and have found some amazing wine from around the state! When it is a special occasion they bring you a slice of cake and take your picture!! It's great!! Recently i was here with an impromptu group of 11 for a happy hour turned dinner. The staff was amazing, they whipped the table together in a manner of minutes, and were very gracious, professional and friendly. We had some fabulous wine and i got the bacon wrapped scallops on a bed of wild rice - wow! another amazing meal! The decor is fun! Giant dome! There is upstairs seating that can be more romantic!

He was patient with my million questions, he was helpful with room and menu choices and he was available every time I e mailed or wanted to visit the venue... just one more time. I recommend Cool River if you have a special event to celebrate... the venue is beautiful, the food delicious and the service AMAZING !! Steve was our server.. He was... perfect ! Attentive, hard working, personable and went way beyond the call of duty.. helping me with the dvd, late arrivals, children's menu etc. It was a wonderful evening. Thank you Cool River !

Cool River is definitely a cool place to eat. The steaks here are a cut above other restaurants. My favorite thing to get for lunch is the Prime Rib Sandwich with Buffalo Chips. Basically you get a ginormous sandwich filled with thinly shaved Prime Rib that is joined with an au jus sauce that can't be beat! When ordering this, be sure to split it as it can feed two! Nice!

I've been here twice, but the second time more recently. It was for a business meeting, but we had a good time. We did the artichoke and the crab cakes for an app. They were pretty good. The artichoke was a little greasy, but still good and a good dipping sauce. For my lunch I ordered the filet salad. Really really good! the steak was good, maybe a bit fatty. The blue cheese crumbles and corn and everything else was delcious. The dressing was good too. The sweet potato fries were so good! I would definetly get something with those next time. Maybe a future business lunch meeting is the near future . . .

If I believed in perfection, I would give this five stars... Hands down, the best restaurant I visited while in Denver last winter. Not only was the food fantastic ( I ordered the most divine Venison with Ligonberry sauce), but the waiter was made the entire evening so special. His name is Paul and he was just the right amount of attentive, friendly, and fun! Being a foodie himself, he told me and my colleague what to order - and we listened, complete with wine pairings. The food did not disappoint! It has probably ruined venison for me, as I don't think anything else will ever compare! My colleague ordered the steak medium-rare and thought it was fantastic as well. I highly recommend this place after a long day or work, or shopping. Make sure to ask for Paul!

The first couple visits went well (3 to 4 star status)... until my wife copied the steak salad and it was all down hill from their. Becoming 2 stars was even easier for Cool River - One day we showed up in 'dressed down' attire and they refused to seat us. We pleaded and said, look its lunch time and we have been here before in worse (sweats and jumpsuit style). They then agreed to sit us in the bar area. This was the last time we visited. We sat unattended in an empty bar area (based on the time of day) only to be served mediocre meals with high price tags. For a better meal simply spend 25 bucks on 4 fillet minions at Costco (only need 1 or 2 for the meal) and add Romain lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, boiled egg, Blue cheese, and some home made raspberry vinaigrette dressing (internet search). Marinate the meat with grill mates Montreal steak marinade and barbecue to perfection - you will have yourself an amazing masterpiece with left over meat for less than it costs to order two steak salads at Cool River.

Cool River Cafe - A Haiku Big Time Power Lunch And Cocktails in your Sports Coat The Cougars Lair Join me on a tri-faceted review of the Cool River #1 - The Dining Experience - The dinning room here is very fancy looking. Good Decor, Good Ambiance, Good Service. Good Food. Notice none of these things crack the GREAT ceiling. Its basically your run of the mill high class steak house. Some things on the menu are better than others, but for the most part, your in for a good meal. But its virtually the same meal you get at all of these neoyuppy steak house type restaurants. I prefer this place for lunch. Dinner just takes to damn long here. That said, you come here more for the appearance of being here with the other DTC Muckity Mucks than for the food. #2 - The Cigar Bar - 4 stars on this one. There is something very nice about being able to kick back with a glass of scotch and a nice cohiba and relax. There are not a lot of places that allow you to do that anymore. Especially with the communist smoking ban all across Colorado. My problem with the Cigar Bar is that it is packed full of pretenders in their Banana Republic slacks and blue oxford shirts. The day trader mixing with the cell phone peddler who thinks hes more. And don't forget real estate agents and "social media consultants". That doesn't align with the idea of a relaxing smoke with friends. #3 - The Nigh life - Come dusk, the Cool River goes from Cafe to Ultra Lounge in the shake of a Cougar's Tail. The drinks are horribly over priced, the bartenders care more about looking good than being friendly and the service just plain sucks. The bar here is an interesting mix of Townies, mid life crisis and Cougars on the prowl. Occasionally you will spot some one trying to be a Denver celebrity (like the long snapper for the broncos or the bull pen catcher for the Rockies . . . or Chris Anderson . . .). Overall this place is just another yuppie watering hole blaring top 40 and helping people pursue the opposite sex. Fine if your into that thing, but not my cup of tea. And if your a true Yelper, you can always find a better spot. Overall, this place is exactly what it seems. An high end suburban watering hole. And that's fine. If you go in expecting good, you wont be let down.

The food is good. Not great, not bad. The service is OK. Sometimes can be a bit pretentious. The atmosphere is completely contrived. The prices are on the high side. But, then again, I have never actually paid for lunch here. I just cannot love a restaurant that is in a corporate theme park.

I've been here a couple of times- lunch and dinner, and there is merit to what other yelpers say: Lunch service is faaar better than dinner service. During lunch, bread was warm, and I loved their ravioli, the III forks salad was pretty good too. The spinach pesto on the stuffed ravioli added a additional layer of flavor and a good helping of EVOO with marinara sauce rounded out the whole dish. Yumm! Now, dinner is a different story. We were a group of 10, bread was cold and the waiter forgot that i had ordered chardonnay (larger crowds, give 'em benefit of doubt etc., etc.) Then, for $24, I got a plate full of grilled vegetables...that's it, a full plate of anything plant-like thrown on the grill! My friend had ordered extra broccoli, which she did not get until dessert (she still ate the broccoli and chocolate cake together;)) Even for a steakhouse, they had comparatively few veg options. Pros: Lunch, decadent chocolate cake Cons: Not much vegetarian choices, dinner service is rough, pricey for the food and service

The atmosphere and the building are really cool. Lots of hype for this place though and it has a hard time backing itself up. Don't get the salad with seared tuna unless you like raw fish. Ewwww. But to be fair, that's the fault of the orderer. Cool River Cafe is a solid place but it's nothing to write home about.

Two words: Wedge Salad. i am very easy to please when it comes to my Wedge, but something about Cool River's has me going back time and time again. It's easy to order take out at the bar, but the restaurant has a great vibe. Their meat is fresh and perfectly cooked and they have large selections of side dishes as well as other great dinner entrees. Get the Wedge and I swear you will be one happy person.

I used to be a big fan of this place. However my past two trips have resulted in me sending back my steak. The first time, because it was under-cooked and yesterday, because it was cold. This used to be a great place to take clients, but for the price, I think there are other local options. They are currently renovating and reducing their size almost 50%. So it is apparant that they are struggling.

I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm bumping this place up. (ONLY if you're going for lunch! I still think it sucks as a happy hour/dinner place) I know I said I wouldn't go back, but it was a business lunch and I had no say in the matter. This time I followed the lead of my coworkers and thank god I did. The two things you should order are: Devil's Creek Shrimp or the Beef Tenderloin Salad. The Shrimp are jumbo, bacon wrapped and doused in BBQ sauce = shrimp heaven. The Tenderloin Salad is basically a whole steak crusted in peppercorns and thrown on top of a salad = wowsa.

My thoughts on Cool River: - Nothing special about their steak - Great prime rib sandwich - Service is average - Pretty good wine list - Like their spinach and artichoke dip for appetizer - Pricey I've been here many time due to the fact that it is close to the my office and my boss really like the steak here. The problem I've always had with Cool River is that their steak just never caught my fancy. Maybe it was just too bland for my taste but something just seems to be missing. I think I enjoy going there more to hang out to shoot pool and ordering finger food from the bar than having a formal meal there. Personally, I think their best dish is their prime rib sandwich for lunch.

Cool River is always good. A bit corporate-feeling because of its location, it's still a good choice for lunch, dinner, drinks or cigars. I had a salmon salad for lunch there today (Nov. 3rd, 2009). Very fresh, great dressing and blackened salmon was prepared perfectly. Service was very attentive.

Maybe the stars were aligned tonight at Cool River as there are not many 5 star ratings. I finished the Trifecta tonight. I've eaten at their two Texas locations and tonight it was all about Denver. The hotel that i'm staying at recommended that I don't go here, but it was a young guy at the desk, so I'm sure we have different priorities when it comes to eating out. The one in Dallas is way cool with live bands, billiards and a cigar area. This location was a little toned down and it was unfortunately quite dead considering it is a Thursday night. It turned out to be exactly what the doctor would have ordered. We are wrapping up a business trip, so we had to find an area that wasn't too loud, but we were 3 guys, so we weren't looking for romantic either. Seeing it was quiet, we ended up sitting in the bar area, which turned out to be a great decision. The atmosphere in these places are really cool - think luxury spa, but with alcohol and TV sets. This location is a little cold on the outside, so it unfortunately probably doesn't make people curious to give it a try. We started the meal with Calamari. It was very light, not chewy at all and had very little grease (in other words perfect). The sauce was no hell, but with lemon on it, you didn't really need it anyway. We went out to steak houses the last 3 nights, so even though this place is probably mostly known for steak, we ventured off that part of the menu for our mains. One friend ordered the BBQ ribs, the other ordered prime rib and I ended up letting our server decide between the salmon or venison dish for me. The wine list is huge and has several great selections by the glass, which we took advantage of. The food arrived shortly after we finished the Calamari. The prime rib was massive and he stated that it was tender and cooked perfectly to his requirements. He was using a steak knife, but he could have done just as well with a butter knife. The ribs were huge and my friend stated that they were just "perfect". They must have been as he ate all of them before I could grab one. I ended up getting the venison, which now I can say - if you ever go here, make this your selection. it is unique to the Denver location. You get about 6 cubes of meat with a lindon berry demi glaze. There was nothing gamey about it and it topped the last few steaks that I've been eating by far. It was cooked medium, it was tender and one of the better dishes I've tasted. The sides were above par (smashed potatoes and asparagus). They rounded out the meal perfectly. The best part of the night was our waitress (never got her name). She adapted well to our age difference and became one of the guys for the night. She made no errors, didn't act fake and she was excited to share information about herself - Masters student at DU (sports psychology) and her brother was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays right out of High School (he grandfather had played in the bigs). She was social, but not intrusive when we were having our own conversations. She was also the one that recommended the venison, which will go down as one of my better eating decisions. We skipped dessert - no room and called it a night. Very good food, super service - I couldn't ask for more. Not sure why this place wasn't jammed with people.

Whenever I travel, I like to experience the best of local fare. Based on multiple recommendations, Cool River Cafe was the place to go for a great Denver steakhouse with clients. Things weren't as they should have been from the get go. Dining with government and contractor clients, we have to be a pain and get separate checks, which we were assured was no problem. Upon the moment of her arrival, our server for the evening told us that split checks was not an option but she would make it easy for us. On to the menu. Your basic diversified steakhouse with a salmon dish, Chilean sea bass, venison and the usual red meat fare with a nice selection of starters, salads and side dishes the menu offers something for everyone. Great wine list, although all of my choices by the glass ran 15 - 29 (yes - that is Per Glass). Fair enough. Serving a table of nine is not an easy task, but for an establishment that presents itself as fine dining, it should not be an issue. Half of the table received salads 10 minutes before the rest; the same lag for entrees but add five more minutes. While being polite to fellow diners, those served first had to enjoy their meals cold. To review the food, I had the caliente Caesar - don't let the name fool you, this is only a standard Caesar. For my main I went with our server's recommendation and strayed from my first choice of Venison medallions and ordered the tenderloin Oscar. Not sure what I was thinking ordering steak with seafood in a landlocked region. The crab meat was not fresh and tasted more like canned fish than a crustacean. Dessert may have been the final salvation. Although the menu indicated peach cobbler, they were serving it with blackberries. When presented, we found a mixture of raspberries and blackberries topped with a wonderful cinnamon vanilla ice cream. The restaurant may have received a mediocre three stars had it not been for the service. Our waitress was incessantly patronizing, which does not bode well with metropolitan diners (sorry Denver, I didn't get the vibe of confidence from this establishment). From condescending tone and inappropriate shoulder touches, pats on the back and other invasions of personal space, I could care less for the service thankyouverymuch. I thought the management should know, given that this clearly is a beautifully presented and well thought out dining destination so I asked for a comment card once our bill was finally settled. The front desk personnel looked at me blankly and reached for business cards. No, I do not want your business card for posterity sake, I want a comment card. No, I do not want to give you one of My cards either. A comment card please. Blank stares. Resignation. I'll find the Web site as I'm sure the owners of Cool River Cafe did not have this experience in mind.

Food is good and well executed. Menu variety will satisfy most tastes. Nice mix of flesh based entrees with interesting overtones. Steak is standard, did not blow anybody away. Good mix of salads. Service is a mix bag. Languid is okay and sometimes desired, but we felt we had been relegated to "Siberia". Drinks. Nice pour. If you are on the prowl in the DTC go to the lounge. Mix of people, ages, and attitudes.....

Cougar: Take your age, divide by 2, add 7. That's the youngest you can go. I once asked someone what the male equivalent of a cougar was...the response? Pervert. With that said, there are lots of cougars and perverts here. It's hilarious. The food is pretty good, they have pool, they have a live band that occasionally plays, but best of all, they have people watching. Don't get me wrong, I like the place and I'll go with friends, on occasion, to have a good time, but it's not really my scene. Their french fries are terrific!

I've only been here for happy hour and appetizers, but the boss takes visitors there on a regular basis. The appetizers were delicious. We got an appetizer sampler with everything from chicken wings to delicious miniature steak quesadillas. If their full-sized steaks taste as good as the chunks in the appetizers, I can't wait to return someday for dinner! The cocktail waitress who served our large party was wonderful, and gorgeous. I was incredibly jealous of her ability to carry heavy trays while balancing on sky-high stillettos! I admit that I added an extra star for her prompt and friendly service, and the impressive stunt of working an entire shift in shoes that would make Sarah Jessica Parker wince.

My wife was given a gift card form work so we tried it. I didn't expect much after looking at their concept/menu and, guess what, they lived up to that! Everything on the app's menu is pretty pricey and there are no descriptions. We finally decided on the overly done, on every menu, cliche, fried calamari. Wasn't too bad but not exceptional either. The portion was HUGE and I wasn't able to finish the sandwich I ordered. But, I didn't shed a tear about that after tasting it. I had the Grilled Chicken Panini w/ Ancho Aioli. The chicken was shaved thinly like I've never seen. I wasn't sure if it what kind of bird I was eating if one at all. It only tasted of artificial mesquite seasoning. Everything else about it was bland. The poor chicken died in vain. My wife had a 5 oz NY strip salad priced at a hefty $15.95. That's like $45/lb! The salad was virtually just romaine and iceberg with so little of anything else, you weren't sure what was supposed to be on it and it was cooked. Well done when order medium rare. What a waste of calories! I refused to complain because I didn't want them to comp anything. That would mean I would have to come back again. Oh, the horror. I can't bear the thought.

I had the pork roast and it was cooked a little too much. I was expecting it to be a little more flavorful but it was still decent. Everybody else in my party really enjoyed their meals so i'm thinking that i just chose the wrong dish. The staff was super cool and helpful, the kitchen closed at 10 but they stayed open another hour just for us. They looked out for a playa!

I ate here a few months ago, so my impression isn't fresh, but it lacked that certain je ne sais quois. It seemed overpriced for what you get, and somehow being in the middle of that giant dome made me feel like I was eating in a government building. I'd go back...but it wouldn't be my first choice, or fifth. So overall impression...meh. I wouldn't blink if someone took me here, but I didn't get a happy cozy feeling with my dinner.

The crab cakes came out so fast they must have been pre-made. Tasted like they were frozen and then deep fried. Over priced plates, nothing to write home about. There are many other places that are far better for less money. No wonder it was empty.

I have been here for lunch 3x, never for dinner, so let me just get that little nugget out on the table right away. For lunch, I like this place. Valet parking, a very nice decor and atmosphere inside and overall, good food. I've had a few seafood specials, which are generally solid. I also had the smoked chicken salad, which was good as well. They have a fun looking bar, with pool, and nice couches to sit and have a beer, perhaps, while waiting for a table or a guest to arrive. I will say, I consistently find the service a little off or slow. It's not bad, just not attentive or "tuned into" my needs - which I would expect from a place this nice. I'll happily return, but would like the service to be a little more on their game. For example, when I sat down this past week, it was 5 or so minutes before even being asked for a drink order... I'd like to return for a few beers and some pool some time as well - very fun looking bar area..

Not the greatest of places to get service .... they make the food the way they want to make it and unless you like it that way you are generally stuck with it.

Ate here with a large group for a business function and we had their private room to ourselves. The decor of the restaurant is gorgeous. Broad open spaces, very fitting for CO, though a bit surprising for the strip mall setting. The wine was great, and I had the best venison steak of my life. Everything on the menu looked delicious and judging by my colleagues reaction, all their meals were equally as good. Tough to judge the overall service quality with such a large group, but we were well attended to.

I'm surprised the average review is only three stars; this is a great place for lunch (esp: a business lunch) and the dinner menu is good too. Service and atmosphere are excellent. I think the only weakness is the steak menu (dinner) choices are expensive - Morton's class prices and I don't think they are quite as good. But the venison and some of the other options are outstanding and pretty good values to boot.

Went there for lunch while on business in Denver area. There was no one at the bar, even wondered if the bar was open. After I was greeted and asked what I wanted to drink/eat. Was good to go. I ordered the Buffalo burger which you can not get in Cleveland. Was very juicy and very good. I wanted to order another one but I am watching my weight. Overall was a decent place for lunch. I hear it is better on the weekends.

Cool River Cafe was a pretty good experience for my party of 4. We came here based off of a resoundingly positive review from the concierge at our hotel and she was able to score us a reservation that had us waiting less than 5 minutes once we arrived. The look and feel of this place (for all you readers who are familiar with San Francisco) reminded me of what the inside of the Palace of Fine Arts would look like if it were converted to a restaurant (only scaled down a notch or two). I loved the blue lights that illuminated the domed ceiling and it was one of the first things I noticed in addition to the elegantly wrapped staircase in the entryway that takes you to the upper deck. My party dined atop of the balcony and while we really enjoyed the great bruschetta dish as a starter, we were pretty disappointed in their famous "Devil's Advocate" appetizer. I wouldn't get this dish again. I ordered the Ahi Tuna for my entree and thought it was good, but nothing great. Two of my dinner mates enjoyed the steak and gave it raving reviews. In retrospect, I wish I ordered the chicken dish, which is what my other friend ordered and so nicely shared a few bites with me. The desserts were probably the best part of the meal. We were ambitious and ordered three: the Cheesecake, the Mile High Chocolate Cake, and the Bread Pudding (note: they do NOT use raisins in their bread pudding). All of them were equally delicious and I would get them again, no hesitations. Our waiter definitely removes a star from my review: I hate to say it, but he was a bit of an ass. The bread pudding note I made above is actually an inside joke amongst my dinner party, for it was our waiter who somewhat aggressively clarified to my friend that "there are NO raisins" in the bread pudding when she misunderstood him. Whatever, dude. It's cool. There's no raisins, we get it.

I have been to Cool River a few times but only once for dinner. I have been for lunch and for happy hour a few times. Last night I went for dinner and I really enjoyed my 12 oz filet. It was great. We were very early (5:00 - my stomach was still on east coast time) and the service was great. Cool River is very convenient for me and I will keep going for drinks. It will be a few months, but I will go again for dinner as well.

Cool River is a cool place. The food is consistent and I have never had a problem with anything I have ordered. Special requests are always handled well. Cool River is perfect for a business lunch or a lunch with a friend you have not seen for a while. Formal (i.e. date) dinners are a real specialty for Cool River. The setting appears formal, but I find it easy to relax here for some reason. The service is impeccable, something that seems to be becoming harder and harder to find these days. The food quality is always high. In the DTC, there are limited options and they are all chains. Plenty of parking and valet as well.

Until last night, I hadn't been here in a few years and never for dinner. Currently, they are offering a Chef's Selection menu of sorts that is truly a good deal. Soup or Salad, Seafood or Beef entree with side and Dessert for $30. The entree portions are a little smaller than the rest of the menu, but once the full-size dessert portion arrived, I was glad that I hadn't already eaten too much. The meal was good. My steak (Steak Oscar) was over-cooked (Well instead of Medium). I figure that's because it is a slightly smaller cut and the kitchen is probably still getting the timing down. I was hesitant to send it back but our server was insistent that the kitchen cook a new steak -- which I appreciated. She offered me a bowl of soup while I waited, but I declined. The new steak was out pretty quickly so I still ended up eating with the rest of my table. And then the steak was perfectly cooked. Steak Oscar includes a Hollandaise sauce and it was just the right amount, not swimming, more like a drizzle. Service was friendly and efficient. We always had drinks in hand, and never waited too long between courses. Once dinner was over, we decided to walk over to the bar area, where we knew there would be some good people watching. If you're going to come to Cool River and hang out in the bar, you must be prepared to embrace it for what it is - a variety of people of all ages and lifestyles, coming together to dance to a motown/latin coverband. I liken it to my company Christmas party. Sure you might not want to do it every week, but it's usually more fun then you think it will be. All in all, a fun and enjoyable night out with friends.

It is always challenging as a vegetarian to walk into a steak house and order food. However, on my last trip to Denver - my sales rep made sure that we will go to a place where he will get his steak and where I would not go starving. He called Cool river and found out there was a "vegetarian" menu. The service was excellent - but the food was pretty pedestrian. They had some mediterrenean vegetarian options that I just cant recall but definitely nothing to write home about. The wine list was decent - but mucho expensive. It essentially was a glorified Applebees (as one reviewer pointed out earlier). Will not go back there again.

MEDIOCRE AT BEST, I had the unfortunate experience of eating here with my family for dinner. I have tried all the local "USDA Prime" steakhouses in Denver and this may be the worst.First;y and I know this changes rapidly the service was horrible. I had the ribeye and much to my surprise had no flavor whatsoever the potatoes tasted better and that's sad. After informing the manager it tasted like sawdust he merely apologized and brought us the full bill... Don't kid yourself this place isn't cheap for dinner at all. Honestly for the same money go to Del Frisco's on Orchard my god my server there sent a handwritten thank you card to my house for Pete's sake!

I like this place a lot, but I can't give it 4 or 5 stars because it's just not as good as the real steakhouses in town. Great location, service, and atmosphere (although because of the high ceilings, it can be very loud). I thought the steaks were very good, but for the price, I would go elsewhere.

Pretty damn nice. I did a biz dinner there, and the food was top notch. Plus they had Fat Tire which was a treat for me as a midwesterner (they didn't have it in Chicago at the time). Great food, real pricey, but the place is all class. Plus there's a way cool cigar area.
